CUTTYHUNK ISLAND, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) — State police say a pilot has died after his small plane crashed into a tree on Cuttyhunk Island off the coast of Massachusetts.

Police identify the pilot as 70-year-old Allen P. Spaulding Jr. of Wilmington, Del. They said he was the only person onboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration and state police said the single-engine 1965 Maule M-4 aircraft crashed into a tree at about 10 a.m.

Dukes County Sheriff Michael McCormack said the plane apparently had a problem after taking off from a small dirt landing strip and went down in a wooded area nearby.

The sparsely populated island, less than one square mile in area, is part of the town of Gosnold, and is about 12 miles south of New Bedford.
