Counterfeit bills passed to youth baseball team

Posted: Updated:

A Gwinnett County youth baseball team raising money for a trip was duped by someone passing counterfeit bills.

Blaze McCauley and his teammates on the Dacula 12 and under travel team felt like they hit a homerun when they found out they were going to the World Series in Cooperstown, N.Y.

"It's a dream for these kids. It's 104 teams from all over the U.S. come and compete to win the title," said Heath Terris.

But it's not cheap.

"We started raising money about a year ago because it's $850 a kid to get to Cooperstown," Terris said.

For two weeks, the boys set up concession stands to raise money for their trip. They later found out that someone was paying them using fake $20 bills. The coach got the bad news when he tried to deposit the money at the bank.

"The lady behind the counter said these 20s were no good," said Terris.

The bank handed the money over to the Secret Service; the boys were out the cash.

"It was pretty sad. We put a lot of time and energy into this. And as much love as I have for my boys on the team, someone just took it right from them," Terris said.

The boys will have enough money to make the trip. They leave tomorrow morning. The extra money from the concession stand was going to help with snacks and incidentals while they were in Cooperstown.
