Region under flood watch Friday as Tropical Storm Andrea moves up the coast

Posted: Updated:
From FOX 25 Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz

Tropical Storm Andrea came ashore in the big bend of Florida (on the northern Gulf Coast of Florida, before the panhandle). Winds had increased to 65 mph at landfall. The storm will be steered up the east coast by a front to the west. It will bring heavy rain to New England, particularly Friday afternoon and Friday night.

The National Weather Service has put us in a FLOOD WATCH for that time period. Rainfall amounts will generally be 1-3" with some reports to the west of the eventual track of the storm reaching 4" or more. That's a lot of water in a short period of time. Winds will be gusty as the storm approaches. I expect gusts over 45 mph. That may be enough to cause some minor damage, perhaps weaker tree limbs coming down. The ocean water will be churned up. Some beach erosion is likely, but the storm will move through quickly, thus minimizing damage.

The storm will be past us by Saturday morning. The rain could be over as early as 7 a.m. Saturday. I expect we will see some sun Saturday and drying. More sun is certain for Sunday.
