Family Member Shares How She Tried To Save Loved One After Building Collapse

Posted: Updated:

With her father-in-law, Borbor Davis buried beneath bricks and mortar while on his job at the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

"It  would ring and go to voicemail," Michelle McClain says she called his cell phone constantly---hoping it would save his life.

"I felt that if I called and anyone heard it they would say I hear a ringing or hear something and it's coming from this area and they'd go and start digging and find him."

Unfortunately McClain and her grieving family got the call to identify her father-in-law's body around eight Wednesday night. Her first thought his wife.

"I was numb," she whispered. "I was feeling for her because  she just lost
her husband. Her best friend."

The 68-year-old Darby man who immigrated from Liberia worked at the Salvation Army Store for eight years. He was one of 6 people killed in Wednesday's building collapse at 22nd and Market.

A day after the deadly demolition, family members set up a photo tribune to 35-year-old Kimberly Finnegan at the collapse site. Friends tell us she got engaged to her boyfriend last month.

Anne Bryan also fell victim to the four story building collapsing onto the Salvation Army Thrift store. She was just 18. A first year student at the  Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

54-year-old Nadine White walked out of Jefferson Hospital Wednesday with bumps and bruises on her face hours after her nightmare. Her attorney, Robert Mongeluzzi says she was buried beneath the rubble for at least ten minutes, shattering her sense of safety.

"Her sense of trust and safety in the world just collapsed in on her," explained Mongeluzzi. "To think she could be standing in a building and something else could bury you in rubble shakes your belief in the world that it's a safe place

Nadine White is the first person to file suit in the building collapse. Her attorney says they want to know if demolition crews had an engineering survey --essentially a demolition plan. And they want to know what it  was.

They've also asked a judge to halt anything being removed from the demolition site so they can get their investigators in to see what went wrong.
