Storm water concerns force beach closures on L.I.

Health officials in Nassau County and Suffolk County have temporarily closed beaches due to concerns over storm water runoff.  

In Nassau County, 19 beaches due to concerns over storm water runoff. The closure is in effect for Friday.

Storm water runoff can have a negative impact by elevating bacterial levels and affecting bathing water quality, according to officials.

Meanwhile, Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, issued an advisory against bathing at 67 beaches due to the heavy rainfall that is occurring today (6/7/13) and forecasted to continue throughout the weekend.

Among the beaches are those located along the northern shoreline of Great South Bay, in Sag Harbor, within and adjacent to various north shore embayments (Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Harbor and Bay, Centerport Harbor, Northport Harbor and Bay, Port Jefferson Harbor Complex, and Stony Brook Harbor), and those Long Island Sound beaches that are directly impacted by nearby storm water discharges.

    Police say they arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the murder of a Brooklyn woman whose body parts were discovered in Bay Shore. Suffolk County homicide squad and the US Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Leah Cuevas, 42, on Wednesday night. Cuevas lived on 346 Sumpter Ave. in Brooklyn, the same address as the victim, Chinelle Latoya Thompson Browne, 27. Cuevas was charged with second-degree murder and held overnight at Suffolk's Fourth Precinct.

    A fire started in a shoe repair store on Long Island and destroyed neighboring stores on Thursday morning. Firefighters were called to Willis Avenue and Goodrich Street in Williston Park around 2:30 a.m. They believe the fire started in a shoe repair store and spread to the surrounding stores. Stores included a dry cleaner and a bar. 13 fire departments responded to the blaze. The fire is not under control yet. No injuries were reported.

John Bittrolff, a married father of two, is the lead suspect in the deaths of two prostitutes whose bodies were found within months of each other in late 1993 and early 1994, authorities said. Police arrested the 48-year-old, who was arraigned at the district court in Central Islip.
