Dolphin set free in waters off Cape after washing ashore
OSTERVILLE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Crews rescued a 10-foot Risso Dolphin after it washed up on a Cape Cod Saturday.
A photographer at the scene tells FOX 25 over a dozen volunteers worked to save the more than 330-pound dolphin that was found on the shore off Seaview Street in Osterville.
The animal was transported via rescue van by police escort to Scusset Beach in Sagamore where it was set free into Cape Cod Bay. Experts say Scusset was chosen as the release site because of favorable winds.
Representatives from the International Fund for Animal Welfare believe the dolphin came from southern waters based on barnacle markings found on it. They also say the dolphin may have been impacted by Tropical Storm Andrea, which moved up the coast Friday.
