GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Longtime New England journalist Richard Gaines, who for the last several years of his career provided impassioned coverage of the region's struggling commercial fishing industry, has died. He was 69.
His wife, Nancy, tells the Gloucester Daily Times (http://bit.ly/11QMcF2 ) she found her husband in their pool at their Gloucester home at about 2 p.m. Sunday when she returned from a trip from Boston.
She suspects he may have had a heart attack while cleaning the pool.
Authorities said the death is not suspicious.
Gaines was a political writer for United Press International in the late 1960s and 1970s, then became a political writer and editor-in-chief at The Boston Phoenix, from 1979 through 1989. He worked as a political consultant in Florida and Massachusetts before joining the Gloucester staff in 2002.
