FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

WRIF morning producer James Campbell said Metallica's Orion set on Saturday was cool, a huge moment for die-hards.

"I almost got trampled. It was like people were running from Godzilla coming from the other stage. They were just running straight to that stage where they played the surprise set," he said.

Campbell went to Belle Isle both days.

"The setup was great, big enough space for all the stages," he remarked.

Campbell said even the non-musical attractions were well done, but more local vendors please.

"I would like to see maybe more local companies out selling stuff," he said.

WRIF staffers told us it appeared crowds exceeded the 40,000 promoters were hoping for, which could go a long way toward making this a permanent event. As crews worked Monday to tear down stages and clean up the island, thoughts turned to next year and what could be
added to make it bigger and better.

The buzzkill of the weekend happened Saturday with will call waits and shuttle delays getting from Cobo to the island. Sunday was smoother, and Campbell said that's the key takeaway.

"If they can just repeat what they did Sunday in the future without the hiccups with the transportation, getting back and forth," he said. "I think overall it was good."

Right now the baseball diamond at the old Tiger Stadium is being used by little leaguers and even some vintage baseball teams. But that could change, even before this season is over.
