You always hear ‘' I never thought it would happen here.. never thought it would happen in our neighborhood.'' in the wake of tragedies like the Santa Monica killer's spree. I heard it today. Well, guess what, it can and does happen just about anywhere.
Now the folks in the quiet charming neighborhood right by the 10 freeway have had the very real and violent world come crashing down around them. The question we tried to answer when we spent some time out there.. outside the small house gutted by flames, plywood boards covering the windows... is what now ?
People still have to live there... even though the apparent psycho killer John Zawahri killed his own brother and father there then torched the place. How do you ride your bike with your kid past that house ? Walk the dog ? Take a stroll. The answer is you just do it. Life goes on.. you get your groceries you get your mail you talk to your neighbors and you realize that there are bad, twisted, mentally ill people in this world, some of them might be our neighbors. Combine that with absurdly easy access to guns and ammo, and you see the results.. Aurora... Newton, Santa Monica. The list grows longer.
You can debate the merits of gun control, the lack of mental health facilities, maybe even the influence of violent video games and movies... yes keep on debating while more people die, and the folks left as collateral damage try to figure out how to get back to a world that no longer exists.
