HAVERHILL, Mass. ( – Tuesday night marks the end of an era for those who have enjoyed Bingo for nearly 40 years at Sacred Hearts School in Haverhill.

While Bingo night has been a steady source of income for Sacred Hearts, the school will no longer host bingo night in the gym and cafeteria citing the school's growing population and need for space for after school activities and events, reports The Eagle Tribune.

For some, Bingo night is a big to do. Preparation is done the night before, rides are arranged, snacks are packed, and friends are called. So when the announcement came in the school's most recent church bulletin, those who had attended and looked forward to Bingo night were disheartened to say the least.

In the bulletin, Sacred Hearts School Principal Kathleen Blain said the gym and cafeteria were going to be used for religious education classes, athletic programs, practices and games, as well as an after school drama program.

Blain told The Eagle-Tribune that fundraisers are in place to make up for the loss of revenue Bingo night has provided over the years.
