Downed trees, power outages reported after storm

Posted: Updated:

Strong storms caused widespread damage across the metro Atlanta area on Thursday.

As of 9 p.m., Georgia Power reported 162,000 customers were left without power statewide. Of those, 78,000 were in the metro north area; 47,000 were metro east; 23,000 were in the metro west; 7,000 were in metro south while another 1,000 were in the northwest.

Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) reported that about 30,000 of its customers across metro Atlanta were without power as of 9:30 p.m.

Much of the damage was reported in Cherokee County.

In Cobb County, numerous trees were reported on top of homes.

More than a dozen trees were spotted down in the Windwood neighborhood, including one on top of Glenda Gardner's home. Firefighters had to go into the home to rescue Gardner.

No one was injured, but the tree caused extensive damage to Gardner's home.

Inside the perimeter, many DeKalb County residents reported outages due to downed trees. Fire crews said they expected to have a long night removing trees from power lines and roadways.

More toppled trees and power outages were reported in Gwinnett County.

FOX 5's George Franco was in a neighborhood that was in the dark on Oak Road near Buford Highway after a power pole was bent after the storm.  Many large trees were seen down in the area.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department said it worked several storm-related calls involving trees on roads and wires down.

Fire officials said that the Liberty Heights area was particularly hit hard. Fire and police crews were in that area going door to door. Some minor injuries were reported.

Sandy Springs police said they received more than 100 calls in the first hour after the storm. There were at least 10 reports of trees on structures, and numerous traffic lights were down, police said. There were no injuries reported there.

Power crews said they were working to restore electricity to customers. They reminded people not to touch downed lines.
