South Boston man accused of aiming pellet gun at police arraigned

BOSTON ( -- A 53-year-old man was arraigned from his hospital bed Friday after police claim he pointed a pellet gun at investigators who thought it was a real firearm.

Kenneth Connolly was arraigned on one count of assault with a dangerous weapon from his Boston Medical Center hospital bed. He was placed on $750 bail under the conditions that he check in once a week with probation officials and undergo a mental health evaluation.

Connolly was shot Wednesday night after Boston and Mass. State police officers responded to reports of a man shooting a silver handgun in the area of East Eighth and Old Harbor streets in South Boston at about 10 p.m.

According to investigators, police arrived to the scene to find Connolly carrying an item that appeared to be a silver handgun. Police claim when officers told Connolly to drop the weapon, he raised it and pointed it at them.

Investigators say at least one officer discharged their weapon, hitting Connolly.

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley's office is assisting Boston and Mass State Police in probing the use of force.

Connolly is scheduled to appear in court on July 10. He is expected to survive his injuries.
