NJ Transit bus driver gets lost, refuses help, riders say

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A simple commute into New York City on a New Jersey Transit bus turned into a nightmare on Thursday. The driver appeared to get lost, so the 45-minute ride took more than two hours.

Jim Coan was on the Express 133 bus, which runs from Cranford, N.J., to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. He said the driver started going in circles, passing the Secaucus Junction several times, before winding up at the Meadowlands, and then finally the New Jersey Turnpike. The driver was supposed to go to the Lincoln Tunnel, but it was clear she had no idea where she was going.

At this point, it was clear something was wrong, Coan said. But instead of asking for help, the bus driver ignored riders' offers for directions and continued to drive in circles, Coan said.

The problem was the driver, according to Coan and other riders, refused to communicate with the passengers or take any direction. It's unclear why.

Then, instead of heading to the Lincoln Tunnel, the bus continued to the George Washington Bridge, completely out of the way, and on to 42nd Street and 9th Avenue.

But it didn't end there.

The driver then circled the Port Authority Terminal and didn't want to let passengers off.

"People were going crazy at that point, 'saying open the door, open the door,'" Coan said.

The bus driver finally relented and allowed the passengers to get off at the corner of 40th Street and 8th Avenue.

A New Jersey Transit spokesperson said the incident is being investigated, and apologized to riders in a statement: "appropriate action will be taken pending the outcome of the investigation."

The driver's name was not released.
