NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A 9-year-old Bronx girl who was hit by a stray bullet Friday night was released from the hospital on Sunday.

Amanda Chauan was released from Jacobi Hospital, leaving with her parents who were holding a string of big balloons for her.

Friday’s shooting is the latest of a disturbingly growing trend of little girls getting hit by stray bullets in the city.

"When they told me they shot her, I said, ‘I can't believe it.' that's the only thing," said Wanda Forte, the victim's grandmother.

Forte had tears in her eyes describing the moment she heard her granddaughter Amanda had been shot in the stomach. Their family is grateful that she survived.

"We didn't know what was going happen to her, and then thank God last night we spoke to her and she was a lot better," said Umberto Lopez, Amanda's grandfather

"She's a smart girl -- real smart girl. She plays with her brother and sister," Lopez said.

Forte says Amanda was playing outside when she was shot around 9:30 p.m. in front of her building on Baily Avenue in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx.

Police say the teenage suspect was riding a bicycle and fired several shots before riding away.

Amanda was struck in the stomach and was rushed to North Central Bronx Hospital and was later transported to Jacobi Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

The NYPD say they have arrested 17-year-old Billy James, Jr. in connection with the shooting.  Investigators believe he was firing at someone else.  He faces attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and illegal weapon possession charges.

"We had a 9-year-old girl who was outside her crime was that she was playing outside in front of her home. And she was shot in the stomach," said Philip Banks of the NYPD.

Amanda is the latest child shot in New York City.

On May 31st, 11-year-old Tayloni Mazyck was hit by a stray bullet in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Also last month, 14-year-old D'aja Robinson was shot and killed by a stray bullet on a city bus in Jamaica, Queens.

As for Amanda, her grandmother can't wait to see her playing again.

"I want to see her laughing, walking, that's all I want to see her do."
