Families of alleged Bulger victims react to key witness testimony

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A former hitman and Winter Hill gang member took to the witness stand in federal court Monday for several hours and there is a lot more to go.

John Martorano's testimony about mob hits in the ‘60s and ‘70s sounded like something out of a movie, but for the families of Bulger's alleged victims, the testimony was tough to hear. Unfortunately, the testimony ahead is only going to get more graphic and more brutal.

Bulger is facing racketeering charges that cover 19 murders.

Martorano was allegedly not involved in the same group of murders, but the methods he described in court – the multiple cars to run interference, the walkie-talkies, the lookouts – all sounded very familiar to the son of Michael Donahue.

Donahue was giving victim Brian Halloran a ride home when he was allegedly ambushed by Bulger.

"It is unbelievable to hear all about the getaway cars, the crash cars. They were the same crash cars and

boiler cars they used to kill my father. Absolutely, that hits me at home. Every time I hear about it," Tom Donahue said.

Bulger's defense attorneys are likely to try and discredit Martorano's testimony by pointing out the 12 years for 20 murders deal he cut with the feds in return for his testimony.

Tom Donahue said Monday that the deal sickens him. In fact, he called it a joke. In Donahue's eyes, Martorano is telling the truth; however, it will be some time before the jury renders their decision.
