Suspects accused of collecting $102,000 in unemployment while working

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Five people have been charged in connection with collecting a combined total of more than $102,000 in unemployment benefits while continuing to work, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Monday.

The investigation began after the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development's Dept. of Unemployment Assistance brought the matter to the attention of the Attorney General's Office. Authorities allege that during the time the defendants were collecting unemployment benefits they collectively earned more than $196,000 from their employment.

A grand jury returned indictments against 43-year-old William Cotto-Rosario and 49-year-old John Hilliard Thursday. Both are scheduled to be arraigned July 11.

Cotto-Rosario, of Waltham, is charged with unemployment fraud (67 counts) and larceny over $250. Cotto-Rosario allegedly received unemployment benefits between April 2008 and June 2010 totaling more than $36,000. Authorities allege Cotto-Rosario earned more than $57,000 from his employment.

Hilliard, of Plymouth, is charged with unemployment fraud (35 counts) and larceny over $250 (2 counts). Hilliard allegedly received unemployment benefits from August 2008 to January 2009 and March 2010 to June 2010. Authorities allege Hilliard collected fraudulent benefits totaling more than $24,000 while earning nearly $47,000 through employment.

Complaints were also taken out against 31-year-old Luis Tejada, 37-year-old Douglas Nunes, and 48-year-old Catalino Maldonado, Jr. on Monday. All are scheduled for arraignment July 10.

Tejada, of Lawrence, is charged with unemployment fraud (33 counts) and larceny over $250. Tejada allegedly received unemployment benefits between October 2009 and November 2010. Authorities allege Tejada collected fraudulent benefits totaling more than $15,000 while earning $26,000 from his employment.

Nunes, of New Bedford, is charged with unemployment fraud (35 counts) and larceny over $250. Nunes allegedly received unemployment benefits between September 2009 and June 2010. Authorities allege Nunes fraudulently collected unemployment benefits totaling more than $14,000 while earning approximately $41,000 through his employment.

Maldonado, Jr., of Indian Orchard, is charged with unemployment fraud (42 counts) and larceny over $250. Maldonado allegedly received unemployment benefits between November 2008 and September 2009. Authorities allege Maldonado fraudulently collected unemployment benefits totaling more than $13,000 while earning approximately $25,000 through his employment.
