Officials refuse UFC's request to allow foreign fighters without Soc. Sec. numbers

(MyFoxBoston.com) – A fight between the UFC and the Statehouse is heading into round two.

According to the Boston Herald, state officials are refusing a UFC request to relax rules barring foreign-born fighters from hitting the ring without Social Security numbers.

Right now, Massachusetts won't issue a MMA license to fighters without the proper documentation. But under federal law, a fighter can get a temporary number after a 10-day grace period.

The UFC has petitioned the state for that exception, but lawmakers are not budging.

In August, several Brazilian fighters are heading to Boston to square off in the Garden. House Speaker Robert DeLeo told the paper the event could bring in $50 million to the city. He is urging lawmakers to reconsider.
