Gwinnett Medical Center worker diagnosed with TB

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

An employee at the Gwinnett Medical Center is confirmed to have been diagnosed with an active case of tuberculosis.

As of June 14, medical center officials have sent out notices to 133 patients who may have come into contact with the infected employee. Those who receive a notice should contact the Gwinnett County Health Department and can receive a free TB test.

All medical center employees are required to have a TB skin test once a year. The infected worker's TB test was set for June; however, the active case of TB became known about May 20.

The infected worker is still employed by the medical center and is currently on leave. The worker is expected to recover.

All other GMC employees who were exposed to the infected employee have tested negative for TB, thus far.

Anyone who did not receive a letter from the medical center, but is concerned they have been exposed is advised to contact their physician or their county health department for TB testing.

According to the CDC, TB is a disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain.

If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal. TB disease was once the leading cause of death in the United States.
