SAUGUS, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Massachusetts State Trooper assigned to the Danvers Barracks was taken to a hospital after his cruiser was struck by an alleged drunk driver in Saugus.

Police said the trooper was sitting in his cruiser on Route 1 during a traffic stop when another vehicle struck it from behind at about 1 a.m.

According to police, the 27-year-old officer had back and neck pain and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was treated and released. His cruiser had heavy rear-end damage.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old man, was determined to be operating under the influence of alcohol, police said. Police said they had not released his name because they had incomplete information about his address.

The driver of the car initially pulled over by the officer faces an unlicensed operation charge.

An investigation is ongoing.
