I-Team: Parents, watch out for kids using snapchat mobile app

Posted: Updated:

Parents, here's another tech trend that your children are using, but that you might not know about yet. It's called snapchat.

It's a mobile app that let's you send pictures, video and text to friends. But, the I-Team's Dana Fowle says there's a twist.

Yes, everything sent through snapchat – get this – self destructs within seconds after it's viewed. So, what's the point? None really. It's just a lot of fun for kids to use. This is what one young person said to me.

You could say, our grandparents took over Facebook. Then, our parents took over Twitter. Now, for us, it's snapchat. But, already it's not just kids who are using it. It's hot on Wall Street, too. Traders are reportedly using it to show their nighttime antics. The kind that might, if posted on other social media sites, get them fired.

While it's generally used for funny slice of life moments, there is a downside. You can still sext or send naked pictures, but the person on the other end – if fast enough – can take a screen shot and keep it. Or, pass it around.

But, let's say it does in fact disappear. It might not be completely gone. At least one forensics company claims for a price it can find self-destructed data – at least on Android smart phones.
