Memorial for Marathon victims to be removed from Copley Square

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The makeshift memorial dedicated to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings will be moved Tuesday.

The Boston Globe reports the Copley Square memorial, which features stuffed animals, running sneakers, and messages of support, will be removed and placed in the archive for viewing.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino said a committee has been created to find a more permanent way to honor the victims in a letter to survivors and victims' families. He expressed his hope that the "respectful closing of the temporary memorial will help us all look to the future."

The Copley Square sight, located just yards away from where the first bomb went off on Boylston Street, has served as a place for people from all over the world to express their condolences and share their support for the city of Boston.

Three people died and more than 260 others were injured in the April 15 bombings.
