CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Chicago man was sentenced to 35 years in prison this week for his role in a West Side gang shooting that left a teenage boy dead and two men injured.

Judge Thomas Hennelley sentenced Cortez Powell to 35 years in prison Tuesday for the 2009 murder of 16-year-old Damier Love, according to a statement from the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

Prosecutors said Powell, 30, and Brian Ward went out April 9, 2009, to shoot rival gang members. They saw Love and two other men standing in front of a liquor store in the 5300 block of West Chicago Avenue.

Ward approached Love and shot him several times, according to the state's attorney's office, while Powell also fired a gun.

The two other men wounded in the attack survived, according to the state's attorney's office.

Powell had previously been convicted twice on drug charges, according to state records.

Ward is still awaiting trial and is scheduled to be back in court June 26.
