Advocates for, against tougher gun laws square off at Capitol

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Advocates on both sides of the barrel took aim at the current and possible future state of gun laws in the U.S.  They took to the Georgia State Capitol to make their voices heard on Monday morning.

The words "killed with a gun" rang out as a woman in favor of expanded gun control laws read aloud from lists of names of people who were killed by a gun.  She stood with others who sought to convince legislators to champion wider background checks before approving a person to purchase a firearm.

They're calling on Georgia's U.S. senators -- Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) -- to support their cause.

Opposing such measures, people in favor of less legislation and increased enforcement of current gun laws stood their ground, many of them proudly displaying their own firearms.

Gun legislation was defeated in the U.S. Senate last April, but Monday's demonstration showed those on opposite sides of this longstanding, hot-button issue are deeply committed to their cause.

"They have to have courage. They have to stand up to the partisan politics. They have to stand up to the very strong lobbyists and they have to stand up for their citizens," said Piyali Cole, a member of Moms Demand Action.

"We think we should enforce the laws as we are now," said Jay Wallace of Adventure Outdoors. "These folks here they want to take away the guns from the honest people. They want to take away guns [to keep] individuals from defending themselves. That's what they're all about."

Some national Democratic leaders have said they believe stronger gun control-related legislation is inevitable on Capitol Hill.  But for that to happen, several U.S. senators would have to change their votes.

Monday's event was organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which was founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
