Mass. man sentenced after fatal crash

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A man who pleaded guilty in a crash that killed an 18-year-old high school student from Middlefield has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison.

Jay Franklin of Upton was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to motor vehicle homicide and drunken driving charges in a February 2012 crash that killed Emily Savery.

The Republican reports that Savery's father asked for a long sentence, while her mother asked for a shorter sentence and a requirement Franklin speak to teens about the night Savery was killed.

The judge eventually accepted the sentence recommended by prosecutors and the defense.

Savery was in Franklin's car when he hit a tree stump and overturned. He told police he'd been drinking vodka.

On Monday, Franklin told the court he'll be sorry for what happened for the rest of his life.
