The High Cost Of Not Voting

Posted: Updated:

Have you ever thought about the cost, not the dollar cost, but the cost to society of not participating in the hard fought right to vote? Whether it's for the President, or a local Councilperson, or the Mayor, if you don't vote, you lose your sense of ownership, of participating in the process.  As I like to say: if you don't vote, you can't complain.

If you look at the numbers of LA's recent Mayoral election, basically a couple hundred thousand people decided the future of a city of almost 4 million.

The idea is to make registration easier, and eventually to make voting easier.  In today's story, I spoke with a passionate community activist for her take on the enormous cost of not voting, I spoke with an elections expert at USC who , interestingly, talked about how ‘'embarrassed'' people are to admit that they didn't vote, and also made the important point that If only a small number of people vote, it doesn't really represent the electorate as a whole.

The Exec. Dir. Of the LA Office of the League of Women Voters felt that if only a small number of people vote, then special interests and the PACS (Political Action Committees) can have an outsize influence on those who win elections, because the officeholder knows who ‘'put them there' and will focus on them.   Not true, though, says Mayor Elect of LA Eric Garcetti.  We sat down and talked about the cost of not voting, in the days before he takes office, and he was quite clear in saying that fewer voters means worse government.. because good government requires as many people as possible to be engaged, every day, not just election day.  It was an interesting discussion.  More of his philosophy at http://www.ericgarcetti.com.

If you've read this far, you may have realized this isn't the'normal type of TV news story.  It requires you to think and reflect a bit. Hopefully learn something!
