Pistons look to fill holes in tonight's NBA Draft

Could Trey Burke become the newest member of the Detroit Pistons tonight? Could Trey Burke become the newest member of the Detroit Pistons tonight?
(WJBK) -

It's a big night for Joe Dumars and the Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons President of Basketball Operations will look to fill holes on a 29-win team that finished next-to-last in the Central Division during tonight's NBA Draft. With the No. 8 overall selection it's rumored the Pistons are targeting a point guard or wing scorer.

There is no doubt that the team needs a serious upgrade in talent at many positions, but which player will make the biggest impact?

Here's a look at several players who could be available when the Pistons are on the clock:

Michael Carter-Williams - The talented Syracuse Orangeman is tall for a point guard (6'6) and a skilled passer. He can cause havoc on the defensive end because of his length, creating turnovers at a high rate. Offensively MCW is a pass first player but has very little outside shooting ability (29% from 3). He will have to make the transition defensively from Syracuse's 2-3 zone to man-to-man. Carter-Williams would bring a true point guard to Detroit and make the switch of Brandon Knight to shooting guard easier.

Trey Burke - What the NCAA Player of the Year lacks in size (6'1) he makes up for in leadership and toughness. Burke, who led Michigan to the National title game, has drawn comparison's to perennial all-star Chris Paul. Burke is a playmaker, averaging over 18 points per game along with almost 7 assists, but may struggle against bigger competition in the NBA. Burke would bring heart, as well as a skilled point guard, to the Pistons. But he would create problems on the defensive end because of his height.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope - While playing on a mediocre Georgia team Caldwell-Pope managed to score over 18 points per game. He's got a slick jumper that could develop into one of the best in the league. However, lack of effort and passing ability may deter the Pistons from drafting him. Caldwell-Pope would bring what Pistons fans have missed since Rip Hamilton left, a pure shooter at shooting guard.

CJ McCollum - The Lehigh star can score in bunches (21.9 ppg). He's got great dribbling ability to create shots for himself over bigger competition but lacks elite quickness. McCollum's weakness is his passing, averaging only 2.4 assists to 2 turnovers in 4 years with the Mountain Hawks. Playing against lesser competition has created many questions as to if McCollum can replicate his lethal scoring ability at the next level. McCollum would bring a guard that can score in bunches but inexperience at the point guard position to the Pistons.

Anthony Bennett - The talented UNLV freshman seemingly attacked the rim at will last year, averaging 16 points per game. He posses good size at 6'7 and can play either small forward or power forward. Defensively Bennett is a bit slow to guard other small forwards, but also too short to guard power forwards. Bennett would bring an efficient scoring small forward which is something that the Pistons have lacked since Grant Hill.

Cody Zeller - Indiana's star bigman can run the floor as well as Blake Griffin and has a great touch around the basket averaging over 16 points and 8 rebounds per game in the country's best conference. Zeller is a tough player in the post offensively and defensively, with very good footwork and fundamentals. Although he may not be great at any one thing, he is good at everything. Zeller would bring athleticism and excitement to the Pistons. Pairing him with Andre Drummond could create many mismatches for opposing teams.

Shabazz Muhammad - The nations top prospect coming out of high school, Muhammad could not retain the status he had before the season started. Muhammed was suspended at the beginning of the season due to alleged violations involving improper benefits. Once he hit the floor he was a scoring machine, averaging 18 points per game while becoming a first-team all Pac 12 player. At 6'6 he might be undersized against other small forwards. Muhammad would bring a strong work ethic and vast scoring touch to the Pistons.
