DETROIT (WJBK) -

A ceremonial ribbon cutting was held Friday for Detroit's new Public Safety Headquarters. The $60 million facility was formerly an IRS building and then a temporary casino.

"This building is a key component in transforming Detroit into a more efficient and safe city," said Mayor Dave Bing.

The green, energy efficient, 400,000 square foot building will house police, fire, EMS, the city's IT department, Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Detroit Building Authority. The consolidation of operations will save the city an estimated $3 million a year.

Next year, the state's new forensic lab will be located at DPSH, as well.

New scout cars should be on the road the beginning of September, and the first ten of 23 new ambulances should hit the streets in mid-August.

A new headquarters, a new chief, new police cars, it all comes under very new circumstances and that is emergency management, presenting a lot of uncertainty for the men and women who protect and serve.

Just this week, the Lieutenants and Sergeants Association learned their labor contract will be terminated. But despite all that uncertainty, this much is certain. The police headquarters at 1300 Beaubien built 100 years ago is now crumbling. It is inefficient much like the department itself and the city it calls home.

Many see the new public safety headquarters as a sign of rebirth.

"This is a renaissance city. This is evidence that we're coming back as a city," said Police Chief Chester Logan.

"The morale lift just in walking through our office spaces, they're beautiful. They're going to allow us to work more effectively and efficiently with all of the technology in place. So I'm really excited. This is a great day for the City of Detroit," said Fire Commissioner Don Austin.
