Mass. stymied at cleaning highway paint spill

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (AP) - Two months after a state highway truck spilled yellow paint on a local highway, South Hadley officials say they're frustrated that the state has yet to clean up the mess.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says a broken hose is to blame for about 100 gallons of paint that spilled onto Route 202 on May 1. South Hadley Town Administrator Michael Sullivan told The Daily Hampshire Gazette that he's received no information from the state about removing the paint.

MassDOT says initial attempts to power wash the spill failed. An agency spokesman says the necessary proper water pressure was causing the road surface to crack and break.

He says the state agency is seeking cost-effective proposals to remove the paint by alternative means that will not damage the road.
