Steve Fulop sworn in as Jersey City mayor

Posted: Updated:

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's second largest city has a new mayor.

Steven Fulop was sworn in as Jersey City's 49th mayor during a private at his City Hall office just after midnight.

The Jersey Journal reports Fulop told family and friends after the ceremony that he'll do his best every day to make voters proud of him.

A public outdoor inauguration is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday in front of City Hall and a block party will follow.

Fulop easily defeated Mayor Jerramiah Healy in May.

Healy had held the seat since 2004, while Fulop served on the city council since 2005. The 36-year-old ex-Marine formerly worked at Goldman Sachs.

Fulop will be taking office with a 7-2 council majority after his slate dominated runoff elections in June.
