PAWS Chicago rescues more dogs from Okla.

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The tornadoes that hit Oklahoma City in May took 23 lives and damaged more than 1,100 homes. The aftermath also included hundreds of wounded and stranded pets, some of which are now in Lincoln Park, waiting for new homes.

Over the weekend, volunteers from PAWS Chicago traveled to Oklahoma City and returned with 79 pets, including 47 dogs and 32 cats--animals that likely would have been euthanized, had they not been brought here.

If these dogs and cats could talk, many of them would have amazing stories of survival; living through one of the worst tornados in U.S. history, than facing likely death in an Oklahoma animal pound, before being brought to Chicago where they're now up for adoption,

Brittani and Bobby Dixon adopted a dog named Madison at PAWS Chicago last February, but Madison, they say, needs a playmate. So, they showed up looking for one of the dogs rescued from Oklahoma. The two dogs had a one-on-one session to see how they'd get along.

"The opportunity with the dogs from Oklahoma, you know, they don't have a home, a lot of them didn't have homes before the tornado," says Brittani Nixon.

"We're just looking or somebody as energetic as her," Nixon adds, about adopting a second pup.

PAWS founder Paula Fasseas says animal pounds in Oklahoma that normally euthanize stray dogs after three days had extended their deadlines to 30 days, so more families could be reunited with their pets. But, time was running out, so PAWS volunteers headed south to the rescue.

"A shelter that normally holds 400 was holding 800 animals," Fasseas explains. "When a national disaster happens, we're really equipped with our amazing volunteers and ability to get out there and help. We really feel it's the right thing to do."

The first group of 14 dogs and 4 cats are already available for adoption.
