BATAVIA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An employee suffered minor injuries during a chemical flash fire Monday morning in west suburban Batavia.

An employee mixing flammable chemicals at a company in the 400 block of North Kirk Road was not properly grounded and caused a flash fire about 11:10 a.m., according to a release from the Batavia Fire Department.

The fire singed the ceiling of a flammable liquids storage room and prompted a fire suppression system to discharge foam to extinguish the blaze, the department said. The building was later ventilated.

The employee suffered "minor" singes to his forearms, and signed a release refusing hospitalization, according to the department.

The fire, which may have been caused by static electricity, caused about $4,500 damage to the building and $500 damage to contents.

Fifteen fire personnel responded and had the blaze controlled in about 10 minutes, according to the fire department. Crews remained on the scene for about an hour.
