Closed Mass. auto school ordered to repay students

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) — The former owner of a now-closed Waltham driving school has been ordered to pay more than $282,000 for enrolling students who paid up front for lessons they never received.

According to a consent judgment filed Monday in Suffolk Superior Court, Frederick Lovely, the former owner of Cam's Auto School Inc., failed to complete education for more than 500 students.

The state attorney general's office says Lovely had been planning for months to close due to financial problems but continued to enroll students, even offering a $175 discount off the $575 tuition to students who paid by cash or check. The school closed in March 2011.

The judgment requires Lovely to pay almost $175,000 in restitution to students and $107,650 in penalties and fees. Lovely says he does not have the money.
