STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Sterling Heights man has been charged following an armed robbery at a Kentucky Fried Chicken on Van Dyke.

Sterling Heights police say Monday around 9:20 p.m., a man knocked on a locked door at the fast food restaurant and indicated his friend had been struck by a car. When the door was unlocked, the man went inside, pulled out a knife and demanded and took money from a cash register drawer before riding off on a bicycle.

Officers located and arrested a suspect at a Sterling Heights home. We're told he struggled with police and kicked an officer multiple times in the face.

The suspect is identified as 26-year-old Andrew Hayden. He has been charged with armed robbery and assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer. Hayden is being held on bond following his arraignment on Tuesday.

Sterling Heights police say Hayden was previously convicted of second-degree criminal sexual assault and had warrants for aggravated assault and failure to register as a sex offender.

Hayden could face life in prison if convicted on the armed robbery charge. A preliminary exam has been set for July 10.
