Quinn gets tough with General Assembly

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

While the governor was working the crowd at the Park Forest 4th of July parade, he was talking tougher than ever to members of the General Assembly. They've said they're not going to meet the deadline he's set next week for passing pension reform. Interestingly enough, the governor has not yet signed the appropriations bill that covers the salaries of members of the General Assembly.

"I think there's a lot of ways to express displeasure of the work product that isn't getting done. And I think the people of Illinois have been way too patient, really, with the General Assembly when it comes to pension reform. The General Assembly has a job to do. And this conference committee does, too," said Quinn. When directly asked if he could possibly veto their salaries, the Governor responded with, "I don't know. We'll see. We'll review everything."

"Everything" clearly includes a potential veto of money for legislators' paychecks. A few hours earlier, former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley accused Quinn of failing to lead in Springfield. "That's what governors do. That's what Presidents do. I saw President Obama do it. You lead. You put a plan out and you drive it. And you build a consensus of the public, not just say, "I'll wait and see what they do and I'll tell you if I like it or don't." That's not leadership," Daley said.

Quinn planned to counter that criticism Friday morning in a news conference at Wrigley Field. He told us he would urge voters to pressure their legislators to approve his proposed rewrite of a bill that would allow Illinoisan's to carry concealed, loaded firearms. Quinn's proposing additional restrictions on when and where guns would be permitted.

While Pat Quinn has one of the lowest job approval ratings of any governor for any state, he is confident that one way to boost those numbers is to have an angry showdown with members of the General Assembly.
