G train weekend shutdown for Sandy repairs

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

Straphangers who rely on the G subway line to get around town will need to find alternate transportation on a dozen weekends starting July 6.

There will be no G train service between Brooklyn and Queens for 12 weekends. The closures are in effect from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday each weekend. The weekends affected are not consecutive.

A shuttle bus will be provided.

Trains will run only between Nassau Avenue and Church Avenue in Brooklyn.

Workers will be repairing the Greenpoint tunnel damaged by Superstorm Sandy and thus impacting G line service. The storm dumped 3 million gallons of salt water into the tunnel.

"Immersed in salt water, power cables are corroding from the inside, while corrosion on the outside of rails and fasteners increases the potential for short circuits which can result in signal problems," the MTA said in a news release. "The controls for ventilation, lighting and communication systems were destroyed and have not been restored to their pre-Sandy condition. With reliability of some components declining, they must be replaced before they become a safety issue."

Plans are in place to resume repairs for five weeks in 2014.

The 12 weekend closures are not consecutive and subject to change:

1. July 6-8

2. July 13-15

3. July 20-22

4. Aug 3-5

5. Aug 10-12

6. Aug 17-19

7. Aug 24-26

8. Sep 7-9

9. Sep 28-30

10. Oct 5-7

11. Dec 7-9

12. Dec 14-16

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day.
