CONCORD, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 59-year-old man drowned in the Merrimac River while fishing Friday.

New Hampshire officials say the man had been fishing along the river's bank about 500 feet from the Sewall's Falls Dam in Concord around 2 p.m.

Witnesses say the unidentified man stepped into the water to retrieve something from the water when he lost his footing and stepped off a steep drop-off into water that was over his head. People on the shore were unable to rescue the man.

Investigators recovered the man's body from the river at about 5:45 p.m.

The man's death remains under investigation by N.H. Marine Patrol and Concord police.
