Firm eyes Mass. city for slots parlor

Posted: Updated:

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (AP) — A Baltimore-based company that has been trying to find a Massachusetts community willing to host a slots parlor has now set its sights on Leominster.

City Council President Susan Chalifoux Zephir tells the Sentinel and Enterprise ( ) that Cordish Cos. plans to share its proposal with the council on Monday.

Councilor Wayne Nickel said the prospective location is on Route 117, near Interstate 190.

Cordish would be required to negotiate a host community agreement with city officials and have it approved by voters in a referendum. Only then could it apply to the state gambling commission for the sole slots parlor license available under the state's 2011 casino law.

The firm previously approached officials in Boxborough and Salisbury, but selectmen in those communities declined to enter into negotiations.
