Lautenberg family endorses Pallone for US Senate

Posted: Updated:

EDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) -- Newark Mayor Cory Booker says he is not surprised that the family of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg has endorsed one of his opponents in the U.S. Senate race, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone.

Booker says their families have had a relationship going back decades.

The mayor of Newark is also brushing off the apparent criticism directed at him by the Lautenberg family.

The family's statement, released by the Pallone campaign, does not mention Booker by name. But it makes several references that appear aimed at Booker and the national publicity he has garnered over the years.

In one instance the family says Pallone knows that "celebrity status" won't get you far.

Asked about the apparent attacks on him, Booker notes his name is not in the Lautenberg statement.
