DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the murder rate in the city is down 7%. So far this year, 163 homicides have taken place in Motown. But protecting police officer, who protect citizens, it Chief Craig's main priority.

Watch Roop Raj's full video report above.

"I've been moving very quickly, certainly supported by the emergency manager, in making sure that every officer has a current bullet-proof vest," Craig told reporters on Friday.

As for the 911 dispatch problem that happened last week, the Chief says that he's working with Motorola. 9 out of the 10 towers are working now, but they're still working on that 10th tower. The problem? Heat.

"Motorola has been very responsive. They're very concerned. They are taking responsibility for the hardware failure. So, I'm optimistic that on Monday the new hardware module should be in place," Craig said.

Chief Craig plans on briefing the media with updates on the department's progress at least twice per month. Stay with Fox 2 as those conferences happen.
