Pakistan teen shot by Taliban is honored at UN

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Pakistani teen that was nearly killed by the Taliban made a heartfelt speech at the United Nations on Friday.

Her story is so inspiring she is known around the world by her first name – Malala.

Living in Pakistan, she started speaking out for education rights in 2009, but Malala was then shot in the head and the neck by the Taliban in 2012.

On Friday, Malala shared her inspiring story for a packed house at the UN.

Malala Yousafzai received a standing ovation after speaking at the United Nations. It's hard to believe that Friday is also her 16th birthday – a day the U.N. has named Malala Day.

"Malala Day is not my day, today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who has raised their voice for their rights."

Malala became a symbol of education reform in Pakistan in 2009, even appearing in a New York Times documentary. Last October, she survived the assassination attempt by the Taliban, after being shot in the head and neck.

She spoke about the attack that also injured her two friends in front of a packed house.

"They thought that the bullet would silence us, but they failed."

A fearless Malala then took on her attacker – with love.

"I do not even hate the Talib who shot me. Even if there is a gun my hand and he stands in front of me, I would not shoot him. This is the compassion I have learned from Mohammed -- the prophet of mercy."

Malala was also presented with the Charter of the United Nations as a birthday present by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. She says she's not stopping her mission anytime soon.

"The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died...strength, power, and courage was born."

Malala now lives and attends school in the United Kingdom after being unable to make a safe return to her homeland.
