Gun buyback held in Brooklyn

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD held a gun buyback program at a Coney Island church Saturday where people were asked to hand in their weapons – no questions asked.

Authorities say 22 revolvers, 22 semi-automatics, 12 rifles, one assault rifle and seven other BB guns were turned in at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly Church on Neptune Avenue.

A $200 bank card was offered for each working gun or assault rifle turned in and a $20 bank card for operable rifles and shotguns. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly were the organizers of the program.

Hynes says he's proud of the program's success in which more than 2,714 weapons have been collected since 2008. He also spoke of the possibility that Commissioner Ray Kelly could be the next Homeland Security Secretary.

Janet Napolitano announced on Friday that she was stepping down from the position in September.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
