US Sen.-elect Markey poised to take oath of office

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Three weeks after winning Massachusetts' special U.S. Senate election, Edward Markey is poised to take his oath of office.

On Tuesday, the longtime U.S. House member will be sworn in as the state's junior senator by Vice President Joe Biden.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Senate.

Markey will fill the office left vacant by the resignation of John Kerry, but will face re-election next year to a full six-year term.

Markey's swearing-in will also mark the end of the tenure of interim Sen. William "Mo" Cowan, who was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick to fill Kerry's seat temporarily.

Markey's elevation also marks the official start of the already crowded special election to fill his House seat.
