2 charged with assaulting Mass. lifeguard

Posted: Updated:

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) — Two people have been charged with assaulting a Salisbury Beach lifeguard, including a man police say asked the lifeguard to stop blowing his whistle because it was aggravating his hangover.

Erin Mulcahy of Haverhill and Shawn Duncan of Lawrence pleaded not guilty Monday in Newburyport District Court to charges including assault and battery on a public employee and disorderly conduct. Both were released.

The Newburyport Daily News (http://bit.ly/1aLqvkE ) reports that police say the 42-year-old Duncan dumped a bucket of water over the lifeguard's head at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday then punched him in the face after the lifeguard explained that blowing his whistle to warn swimmers was part of his job. Authorities say the 24-year-old Mulcahy then punched the lifeguard on the chin.

It was unclear who represented the defendants.
