Thieves strike elderly widow's home 5 times

Posted: Updated:

A widow says that thieves have broken into her southwest Atlanta home numerous times – including twice in the last month.

Gretta Holloway, 71, says crooks have stolen everything from furniture to her washer and dryer out of her home on Tuckawanna Drive at Benjamin Mays Drive. They've even stripped her copper pipes out, leaving her with no water.

"What do senior citizens do at this age? My heart goes out to any senior citizen who is being robbed or taken advantage of --you're just helpless," Holloway said.

Holloway and her husband moved into this brick ranch in the late 1980s They have been burglarized five times, but what has really unnerved her is the last two have been within the last 30 days.

"Each time, I go to Home Depot, I live there, buying deadbolt locks, buying doors -- just buying different things to rebuild my home. And as fast as I try to rebuild it, they come and they just take it," Holloway said.

Holloway said that if she reports too many of the break-ins to her insurance company, she'll be dropped. The intrusions have forced the nursing home employee out of her house and into a state of confusion.

"I'm staying at my family's home with my sister, because it's unlivable," she said. "You can't live in a house with no lights and no water."

Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin lives nearby in the middle class neighborhood.

Police said that Holloway has called them six times, but they believe the sixth and fifth times were part of the same burglary. They said that they hope to meet with her soon.
