State police conduct search along Route 128

Posted: Updated:

(MyFoxBoston.com) – Traffic was stopped and backed up on Route 128 South Tuesday afternoon as investigators conducted a search possibly in connection to the Aaron Hernandez murder case.

The search was not confirmed to be related to Hernandez; however, when FOX 25 called Mass. State Police to inquire about the search, authorities said to contact the Bristol County District Attorney's Office even though the search was in Norfolk County.

A spokesperson for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office would not comment on a pending investigation.

Nearly a dozen state troopers were out on 95 South in Dedham, not far from the Needham line, in an area where road construction is taking place.

Police walked the shoulder and the grass for more than an hour.

It is unclear if they found anything.

One of the items still outstanding in the Hernandez case is a mirror that broke off the suspected murder vehicle. The mirror allegedly belonged to a silver or gray Nissan Altima rental car.

Investigators say Hernandez drove Odin Lloyd in the rental car before Lloyd was shot and killed.

Authorities have made a couple of public pleas for help finding the mirror. They believe the mirror is somewhere along the route from Dorchester to North Attleboro.

The only road specifically mentioned so far is Route 95.

The importance of the mirror is also unclear, but there are a couple of possibilities. The mirror could help authorities establish the route Hernandez used after he allegedly picked up Lloyd in Dorchester, and if there was a struggle earlier in the night, it could have evidence on it.

Also, if someone on the "inside" is talking that person may have provided information about the mirror or how it came off that has led authorities to believe it's a crucial piece of evidence.

Another crucial piece of evidence that is also believed to be missing is the .45 caliber murder weapon.

Hernandez, who was released from the Patriots after he was taken into custody on June 26, has pleaded not guilty to Lloyd's murder.
