Georgia DOT talks variable speed limits for I-285

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The speed limit for I-285 is a big complaint for a lot of Atlanta drivers. Now, changes are on the way.

It's been 55 mph for years. But, I-285 is about to see variable speed limits.  Last year, Georgia officials approved a plan to increase the speed limit throughout the day in order to keep traffic moving faster.

The Federal Highway Administration says more than 261,000 drivers use I-285 each day. And, officials are well aware that only a few actually drive the posted 55-mph speed limit.

Now, the Georgia Department of Transportation is planning not only to crease the speed limit to 65 mph, but it could also make speed limit adjustable through the direction of electronic signs.

Variable speed limit signs have been successful in other major U.S. cities. Atlanta officials think these could be a great option for Atlanta.

The speed limit will change with traffic congestion and can be lowered when traffic is worse or when a wreck or poor road conditions pose a hazard.
