7-Year-Old Nearly Drowns In Cobbs Creek Pool

PHILADELPHIA -

Doctors are working to save a 7-year-old boy who nearly drowned in Philadelphia's Cobbs Creek section Thursday afternoon.

The boy was pulled from the bottom of a public pool just before 1 p.m.

Right now, authorities say he's in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

A local camp, Family Forward of Philadelphia, was using the pool when a counselor noticed the young boy.

Lt. John Walker said the counselor saw the child "on the bottom of the pool, face down."

"She alerts the counselor that's in the water," Walker said. "That counselor immediately dives under. With the assistance of the lifeguards, they're able to get the child from the water. The lifeguards immediately started CPR."

Philadelphia police say the pool can hold up to 150 people but the rules are there should be 1 lifeguard for every 30 kids.

Southwest Detectives say the camp broke kids into groups for safety and believe there were 24 children in the pool at the time the boy was spotted at the bottom.

We're told there were four lifeguards on the deck and four camp counselors were in the water.

The lifeguards, counselors and some of the kids are being questioned by police.

"This is just a tragic incident," Walker said. "In the middle of the summer, I mean, when you want kids in these types of environment, but unfortunately water is dangerous sometimes, and again we've just got an unfortunate situation."

The boy's family is with him at the hospital, FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito reported live Thursday afternoon from outside CHOP.
