Red Sox activate Drew from disabled list

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox activated shortstop Stephen Drew from the disabled list and optioned third baseman Brock Holt to Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday before a game against the New York Yankees.

Drew, hitting .233 with five homers and 31 RBIs, missed 16 games because of a strained right hamstring. He was in the starting lineup on Saturday, playing shortstop and batting eighth.

"I'm excited," Drew said as he got dressed at his locker about three hours before the game. "It's kind of frustrating I had to go on the DL."

Drew originally injured his hamstring in late June, and the Red Sox waited about a week before placing him on the DL during a West Coast trip.

"We were trying to stay away from the DL," he said. "It's probably kind of better I went on it."

Drew went 2 for 7 in two rehab games for Double-A Portland before returning to the Red Sox.
Holt hit .290 (9 for 31) with eight RBIs in 10 games with Boston.
