Weapons, phones found in raid at Fulton County Jail

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A supervisor said an "excessive" amount of weapons were found in a recent raid at Fulton County Jail.

Commanders said they were surprised when a raid at the jail produced a dozen cell phones and a dozen homemade weapons, often referred to as shanks.

"This is excessive. This is a lot from one shake down," said Lt. D. Cochran of the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.

Inmates use any piece of metal they can pull from the ceiling, or torn apart from a mop, to turn into a shank.

"This is an aluminum piece and taken from one of two places. Either from our drop ceilings that are accessible from the mezzanine level in the zone, or from the sound-batting sound-deadening areas put on the walls of every zone," said Cochran.

Cochran noted that the weapon had a lanyard on it, which inmates attach to their waist and walk around with the shank.

Inmates use smuggled cell phones to carry hits on the outside, and call fellow gang members to threaten members, Cochran said.

Officials said that they are investigating how the inmates are getting the phones inside the jail. Family members aren't allowed to have direct contact with the inmates on the jail floor. Only clergy, attorney and staff members are allowed on the floor.

Past investigations have found that deputies were paid to put phones on the floor within reach of the inmates.
