South Boston man convicted in murder of 65-year-old neighbor

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A South Boston man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the 2011 death of 65-year-old Barbara Tagen.

Adam Cassino, 27, was found guilty after seven days of testimony. Cassino will face a mandatory life term without the possibility of parole at a hearing scheduled for Aug. 5.

Investigators said Cassino lived across the street from Tagen. The 65-year-old allegedly accused the defendant of stealing her prescription pills on several occasions.

Tagen was found beaten to death inside her Dorchester Street apartment on Aug. 27, 2011.

Investigators also say that days before Tagen's body was found, Cassino was involved in a fight with several residents in her building after being accused of stealing another resident's prescriptions.

During a stay at a neighbor's apartment, Cassino allegedly made trips in and out of the home. Prosecutors say he was gone for one two-hour period during which he falsely claimed to be doing yard work.

Cassino was committed to a state substance facility on Aug. 24 by his mother. Three days later, Tagen's body was found. Police believe she had been dead for days.

During their investigation, homicide detectives interviewed Cassino who admitted to having contact with Tagen on the Monday night before he was committed.

Detectives recovered Cassino's sneakers which had bloodstains on them that matched Tagen's DNA.
